In the process of trying to install Linux on a laptop without a CD-ROM drive, I've had the misfortune of writing disk images to about 15 floppies. Every time I had to write to a set of floppies, at least one of them turned out bad. I guess I never realized how fickle floppies can be. Long live USB flash drives and bootable CD-ROMs!
Speaking of trying to install Linux without a CD-ROM drive, I'm still working on it. Oh yeah, and also without a high-speed Internet connection. Debian Sarge wouldn't give me an option for a hard drive install, even though it's supposed to be possible, so I gave up on that. Fedora Core 4 has network and hard drive options available. I've tried setting up a local server on one of my Windows boxes, but didn't have any luck with that. I think my next step is to boot into my other (Windows) partition, copy the ISO files over the network to the hard drive, and try a hard drive install... what a pain.
